Fort Worth United Futsal League
Fort Worth United, in cooperation with Game On indoor arena, will be hosting indoor/futsal games every Wednesday beginning November 29 and continuing through the end of January 2007. These games, included as a part of FWU’s Academy development program, will be open to all interested U8 through U12 players.

The sessions will follow a futsal format - the field will be split into two playing areas and games played using a futsal ball and futsal rules.  FWU coaches will be on hand to offer tips and instructions.

The first session will be an introductory session with lessons provided by FWU coaches.  The remaining sessions will follow a typical "league" type format.

What is "futsal"?
The term FUTSAL is the international term used for the game.  It is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.  The game is played in a Basketball-sized courts, both indoors and out without the use of the sidewalls.  FUTSAL gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil.  The game is now played, under the auspices of FIFA, all over the world, from Europe to North and Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia and Oceania.  Futsal is FIFA's official form of indoor play.

What makes Futsal Superior?

Several aspects of the game serve to further superior skill in players.  Firstly, since walls are typically not used (as they would be in "American indoor"), the player is forced to control the ball to keep it in play.  Secondly, the construction and response of the futsal ball itself serves to promote exceptional ball control and touch.  The futsal ball is a smaller, low-bounce soccer ball.  The size and responsiveness of the futsal ball limits the ability of the player to rely on the ball's "bounce" to touch and control the ball.  It requires more skill and technique to control and dribble a futsal ball.

How do you play?

A summary of the futsal rules may be found here.

What do I wear?

Shoes and shinguards are all that are required.  Note that Game On arena is a "no cleat" facility.  Tennis shoes or turf shoes are the only allowable footwear.
