FWU Member inducted into US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame
A great honor is being presented to one of FWU's own. Jimmie Wofford, mother of Jacki Boaz (97 Boys North), will be inducted into the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame at February's 2010 US Youth Soccer Adidas Workshop. Jimmie Wofford was the original Region III US Youth Soccer Commissioner and worked to write and pass the original bi-laws for US Youth Soccer. Her and Jacki's Dad (who was the president of NTSSA for 8 yrs) were heavily involved in ground work for North Texas Soccer and getting associations formed in the late 60's and early 70's. Among their many contributions both on the state level and national level, Jimmie had a huge impact and was the advocate for woman's soccer including being the first licensed USSF female referee, the first US Women's commissioner for USSF, and the first Executive Director for North Texas Soccer.

Fort Worth United wins Bronze and Gold in Junior Olympics
Fort Worth United Soccer Club sent two teams, boys and girls, to the Junior Olympics event in Reggio Emilla, Italy late last month. The Junior Olympics are held every four years and are sanctioned by the International Youth Sports Olympics committee. For many years, Fort Worth United Soccer Club has been the exclusive provider of players and coaches for the event. The event this year hosted some 5,000 young athletes from 23 countries around the world. FWU sent two teams, boys and girls, coached by Kenny Alexis, Jamie Southern and Dave Phillips. Both teams faired very well in the competition.

Boys from Chico Sanchez's 92 Gold team made the core of the United States boys team. The boys team, coached by Dave Phillips, competed in five matches and returned home with the Bronze medal. The girls beat teams from Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Italy to earn a berth in the finals where they beat Italy 4-1. Three players from Kenny Alexis' 92 Gold team and six players from Tony Barriteau's 92 Blue team returned home with the gold medal. Congratulations to both teams and all coaches involved and a big thanks for representing us in the event.

FWU Sand Pit a Unique Training Bed
Fort Worth United Soccer Club is one of the few clubs in North Texas to possess a "sand pit" as part of their training facility. Located in between the FWU practice fields at FWU's Resource Connection Practice Facility, the "pit" was completed last month and readied for team use just in time for Summer Open Practices and Tryouts. Sand absorbs and disperses the downward force expended while running and hence, makes your muscles work much harder to produce the same result. It also adds a level of difficulty to ball control and requires quite a bit more balance to effectively maneuver on. FWU teams uses the sand pit as part of its strength and conditioning program. Shown above are the FWU 95 Boys Gold team (Classic D2) playing a game of "beach soccer" in the pit.
