Favorite Shooting Tips
If you've already checked out the Fundamentals of Shooting tip but are still craving more:
  • Shooters must be willing to shoot and willing to miss. But, shooting and missing the target entirely should not happen - nothing gained from shooting wide or way over the goal just for the sake of shooting. 
  • You should shoot at corners of goal and low. Shots from narrow angles are easier to save so players should understand the passing zone (side of goal) and kicking zone (front of goal). 
  • 4 easy steps - Look (at goal), control, look (at ball), shoot. 
  • Run at diagonals to the goal, almost never are shoulders parallel to the goal line. Always follow up for a rebound. 
  • Never strike the ball harder than is necessary to score. Accuracy is more important than power. 
  • Prepare the ball for shooting with the next to the last touch. Push it slightly forwards at about a 45 degree angle to set up for the shot. The last stride with supporting leg should be a long one. The weight of supporting leg should be on balls of feet. Toes of supporting leg should be pointed at the goal. Before hitting shot, knees of kicking foot, your head, and your shoulders should be above the ball. If possible, shift weight forwards and land on the striking foot after the kick. 
  • A bent knee in effect shortens the leg and reduces the power delivered. A stretched leg increases power and distance. 
  • Make power shots with the laces of the shoe. The plant foot should be about 9 inches from the ball with the toe facing the direction you want to shoot in. The muscles of the foot should be contracted so it is locked tight. Follow through the shot. 
  • The plant foot should make a short hop after shooting and ideally you should land on your shooting foot. 
  • The smaller the striking area, the toe for example, the more the ball shape is distorted by the kick and less predictable in its flight. The longer the contact between the foot and the ball, the greater its effect on distance, flight, and ball movement.   Hence, strike the ball with the laces of your shoe.
  • Strike ball below midpoint to make it rise or to give it backspin. 
  • Strike above the ball to create forward spin or cause the ball to dip. 
  • Strike on either side of the vertical mid line to cause the ball to spin and curve in the opposite direction. 
  • Shooters on the run usually like to approach the ball at an angle to allow for natural leg swinging slightly across the body.
  • A player must see the 'shooting line' (path from ball to the point being aimed at) instantly.
